A Welcoming Home
Newly relocated to the area for work, our client purchased this spacious Princeton, New Jersey home with the goal of becoming a foster parent.
Charged with providing furnishings, artwork, paint colors, and custom millwork, we set out to create a sanctuary for all the home’s inhabitants, both present and future—the owner, who is a single working woman, her furry companions (two dogs and two cats), and the children whom she hoped to welcome.

Our client loves entertaining, so we chose a more sophisticated aesthetic for the living and dining areas. Her preference for vibrant jewel tones is reflected in the grasscloth wallcovering in the dining room and the living room sofa’s throw pillows and accents.
In the family room, we redesigned the fireplace with a reclaimed oak wood mantle and handcrafted blue tiles. A nearby floor cushion creates a relaxing corner for kids to decompress, while an adjacent shelf provides books aplenty. The coffee table is made from a special upholstery material designed to echo the patina of worn leather.
A children’s study off the kitchen offers a calming spot for doing homework. Our client also uses the desktop surfaces for packing supplies for overseas soldiers.
The home office features a long work surface with custom built-in drawers and cabinets. Custom bookcases, artwork, and a plush sofa create a stylish backdrop for video calls—and, it turns out, a regular lounging spot for the cats (good thing the upholstery is pet friendly).
The primary bedroom is a serene retreat with a soft, neutral palette interspersed with strategic pops of color.
Custom closet interiors including dresser drawers and shoe shelves were designed and tailored to accommodate our client’s wardrobe.
We designed each of the three children’s bedrooms with a flexible approach to appeal to different ages and genders. In two of the bedrooms, we also removed a portion of each closet to create cozy reading nooks.
In the first children’s bedroom, we used fun wall decals, artwork, and rugs, all of which can be easily switched out if needed, to make younger kids feel welcome.
In the second bedroom, we chose soothing, neutral colors for tweens and early teens.
In the third bedroom, we envisioned the space for teen boys.
